Using PAC 30% flocculation chemicals in water treatment is a new direction, completely replacing Sunphate aluminum alum, Sunphate iron alum, ... ensuring environmental friendliness and human health. With increasingly improved and enhanced quality along with reasonable prices, PAC flocculation is expected to be a key product in the water treatment sector in 2020.

Overview of PAC coagulant (poly aluminum chloride)

1. What is PAC Chemical?

• Name: Polymeric flocculation substance

• International name: poly aluminum chloride

• Other names: PAC chemical, PAC water treatment chemical, polymer chemical, poly aluminum chloride chemical, PAC flocculation agent

  • Chemical formula: (Al2 (OH) nCl6-n) m

PAC chemical has an English name of poly aluminum chloride, which is a type of aluminum alum that exists in the form of polymers. The chemical has an ivory-white powder and a yellowish sheen dissolved in water. In addition, PAC also exists in liquid form. The product can be used instead of alum aluminum sulfate in water treatment, domestic water, wastewater, ...

2. PAC flocculation applications

PAC flocculants have the ability to flocculate and completely remove dissolved and insoluble organic matter and heavy metals in water, so it is commonly used in the following fields:

  • Use in water treatment for domestic use to serve human life. Treating surface water and groundwater by flocculation of hydroxide cotton, reducing pH in water, flocculation of suspended substances, making in water.
  • Used in the treatment of wastewater from industries, domestic wastewater such as textiles, dyeing, paper, ... by treating circulating water from stages in the production process to separate suspended impurities, Color adsorption, coal inclusion, late smoke, waste, ...
  • Application in water treatment for aquaculture, especially shrimp farming.

3. Mechanism of action of PAC chemical

When suspended solids in water are used, Al (III) chloride salts are used. At this time, due to dissociation and hydrolysis we have particles: Al3 + Al (OH) 2+, Al (OH) 4– and Al (OH) molecules, along with three polymer particles that are Al2 (OH) 24+ , Al3 (OH) 45+, Al13O4 (OH) 247+ and Al (OH) 3 solid. Among them, Al13O4 (OH) 247+ is the main and best flocculation agent available today. This substance is referred to as Al13 for short.

The mechanism of action of PAC chemical is also very easy to understand, when the PAC dissolved in water will create charged Al13 particles (7+). The polymer particles neutralize the colloidal charge and cause very strong flocculation, their hydrolysis speed is also much slower than Al3 +. Therefore, they increase the survival time of polymers in water, increasing their effects on the treated colloidal particles. On the other hand, the polymer particle size is much larger than Al3 +, so the cotton residue shape is also bigger and stronger, which is favorable for the next sedimentation.

A special feature is that the active pH area of PAC is also 2 times larger than alum, so the application of PAC is more common and widespread.

4. Advantages of using PAC compared to alum sulfate and iron alum

PAC flocculation chemicals have many outstanding advantages over sulfate alum, iron alum, .. specifically:

• The sedimentation effect is 4-5 times higher

• The dosage is low, only a small amount is needed for water treatment

• PAC chemicals have large, easy-to-settle flakes, minimizing solid waste sludge in water sources

• The pH is stable, saving time and money

• PAC's ability to remove organic substances and heavy metals is greater than that of sulfate alum and iron alum.

• Safe to use for equipment piping with low corrosion properties

• Using PAC chemicals that are safe for health and friendly with the environment.

PAC chemicals have a very strong effect when used at low doses, so it is necessary to use the appropriate dosage, as a rule, it is not advisable to overuse overdose affecting human health.

Current situation of production and use of PACs in Vietnam

According to statistical results, every year, Vietnam has to import from 15,000 to 20,000 tons of PAC flocculation chemicals from India, Korea, China and Japan.

  • PACs from India and Korea are white in high quality with a content of 28-30% of aluminum oxide
  • Chinese PACs are brown in color, of lower quality, with a content of about 22-24% of aluminum oxide

However, with the motto "Vietnamese people give priority to using Vietnamese goods", many organizations have researched and deployed PAC chemical production in Vietnam to ensure quality with reasonable prices for users.

1. PAC chemical production market in Vietnam

Currently, Vietnam has 2 factories producing PAC flocculation chemicals with an industrial scale, fully meeting the standards, they are:

  • A 10% liquid PAC manufacturing plant under the Southern Basic Chemical Joint Stock Company
  • 17% PAC liquid production plant and 30% powder PAC flocculation chemical under Viet Tri Chemical Joint Stock Company

In the treatment of domestic grade, 30% powdered PAC chemical is more commonly used. PAC Viet Tri Chemical has affirmed the quality in the hearts of users, the product is always improved and does not use SO4 2- based additives.

Compared to quality, PAC Viet Tri chemical is not inferior to flocculation chemicals from Japan and Korea, but the price is much lower. PAC production process at the factory is standard.

2. Quality comparison between PAC China and PAC Viet Tri

In fact, some units of the Water Supply Industry that used Chinese PAC flocculants found that the quality was not stable, leading to unexpected problems during use. Even causing counter-effects, adversely affecting human health.

However, Chinese PAC chemicals still penetrate into Vietnam because some businesses are not fully aware of the price, so they find all ways to bring this product to water treatment plants.

3. The correct way to prepare PAC chemicals

The way to prepare PAC chemicals depends on the turbidity, organic quality, and pH in water that the dosage is different:

• For water with turbidity <90NTU: dosage from 6 - 10g / m3 PAC

• For water with turbidity> 90NTU: dosage from 10 - 30g / m3 of PAC chemical

• In industrial wastewater treatment for paper, textile and dyeing industries, the recommended dosage is 20 - 200 g / m3.

=> Note: To determine the dosage of PAC chemicals you need to use, you should use the Jar test method to determine the most accurate.
